چکیده

We report on the formation of surface instabilities in a layer of thermoreversible ferrogel when exposed to a vertical magnetic field. Both static and time dependent magnetic fields are employed. Under variations of temperature, the viscoelastic properties of our soft magnetic matter can be tuned. Stress relaxation experiments unveil a stretched exponential scaling of the shear modulus, with an exponent of β = 1/3. The resulting magnetic threshold for the formation of Rosensweig-cusps is measured for different temperatures, and compared with theoretical predictions by Bohlius et. al. in J. Phys.: Condens. Matter., 2006, 18, 2671–2684.

Metal pad instabilities in liquid metal batteries.

A mechanical analogy is used to analyze the interaction between the magnetic field, electric current, and deformation of interfaces in liquid metal batteries. In the framework of a low-mode, nondissipative, linear stability model, it is found that, during charging or discharging, a sufficiently large battery is prone to instabilities of two types. One is similar to the metal pad instability kno...

Hydrodynamic instabilities in ferronematics.

In the hydrodynamic description of ferronematics there are various dynamic magnetic-field effects, linear in the field strength, that are negligible in usual nematics, but can play a role in ferronematics. Here, we investigate theoretically the influence of these new terms on the thermal convection (Rayleigh-Bénard) and the viscous fingering (Saffman-Taylor) instability in ferronematics in the ...

Capillary instabilities in thin nematic liquid crystalline fibers.

A complete identification and characterization of three distinct capillary instabilities in nematic liquid crystal fibers is presented. Linear stability analysis of capillary instabilities in thin nematic liquid crystalline cylindrical fibers is performed by formulating and solving the governing nematocapillary equations. A representative axial nematic orientation texture is studied. The surfac...

Controlling fingering instabilities in rotating ferrofluids.

We perform a detailed analytic and numerical study of the evolution of a ferrofluid drop confined to a rotating Hele-Shaw cell in the presence of an azimuthal magnetic field. Our results demonstrate that the centrifugally driven interfacial instabilities can be simply controlled with the use of a current-carrying wire. We compare an analytic linear analysis to our computational results and show...

Paradoxical transitions to instabilities in hydromagnetic Couette-Taylor flows.

By methods of modern spectral analysis, we rigorously find distributions of eigenvalues of linearized operators associated with an ideal hydromagnetic Couette-Taylor flow. The transition to instability in the limit of a vanishing magnetic field has a discontinuous change compared to the Rayleigh stability criterion for hydrodynamical flows, which is known as the Velikhov-Chandrasekhar paradox.
